The Solopreneur's Guide to Stress-Free Video Podcasting (My Exact 4-Step Method)

Podcasting can feel like this giant, complicated beast. There’s editing, equipment, consistency… the list goes on. And I’m not here to downplay that. But here’s the thing: after producing three weekly astrologer podcasts over the past six months, I’ve realized you don’t need a huge team or endless hours to make podcasting work for you.

I’m about to share the exact method I use, and teach my clients, to create a weekly podcast in 10 hours per month. Yes, that’s possible—whether that looks like 30 minutes every weekday or 2.5 hours once a week. This is your behind-the-scenes roadmap: simple, repeatable, and completely doable on your own.

Hi, I’m Liz Manuell. If we haven’t met yet, welcome! I’ve been a content strategist and producer for five years, helping solopreneurs and small business owners create high-quality, evergreen content that doesn’t take over their lives. And today, I’m breaking down my Plan-to-Publish method, a four-step framework I’ve developed to take you from scrambling to a sustainable content system.

My 4-Step Framework: Plan, Create, Edit, Publish

Step 1: Plan

Planning is about outlining your content piece—and before you outline, you have to look at what’s worked before. Forget comparing yourself to everyone else in your niche; it’s far more valuable to see what’s resonated with your own audience.

Focus on three key metrics:

  • Click-through rate: Aim for 4–5%.

  • Average percentage viewed: Ideally around 40%.

  • Subscribers gained: This shows whether people value your content enough to follow you.

Once you know what works, you can identify the storyline you want to tell. I don’t use traditional content pillars; I use problem-and-solution pillars. One problem, one solution, and five content pieces that guide your audience through the stages of awareness and engagement.

Then outline your content:

  • Title & Thumbnail: Title should be clear, casual, and SEO-friendly. Thumbnail can invoke curiosity or emotion.

  • Hook: Capture attention immediately—relate it to your story or your results.

  • Goal: Be specific about what viewers will walk away with.

  • Key Points: Three to five bullet points to riff on—no need for a full script.

  • Calls to Action: At least two—one at the beginning, one at the end, woven naturally into your content.

Step 2: Create

This is the action stage: writing, recording, or filming your content.

Environment matters:

  • Feel ready, grounded, and excited.

  • Reduce noise, manage lighting, and set up your visuals. Natural light + minimal artificial lights work beautifully.

  • Make your space feel aligned with your personality—cozy, professional, or however you show up authentically.

Think about the four senses while creating: sight (visual setup), hearing (audio quality), taste (authentic expression), and touch (the impression you leave). When you get these right, your content automatically resonates more.

Step 3: Edit

Editing is about polishing, not perfection. And here’s the truth: you don’t need to be a pro editor.

  • Cut long pauses and filler words.

  • Center yourself in the frame, adjust color and format if needed.

  • Graphic animations? Optional. Canva is free if you want them, but a whiteboard behind you works just as well for illustrating your points.

  • The key is authenticity over flash. The simpler and more genuine, the better.

I love using Descript—it transcribes your video automatically, and with a subscription, you can cut filler words and pauses in one click. This alone can save hours in editing.

Step 4: Publish

Publishing is about making your content visible and optimized.

  • Study trends in your industry (titles, thumbnails, copy styles).

  • Use keywords wisely—look for niche terms your audience is searching for.

  • Use AI tools like ChatGPT to draft titles, summaries, and tags, but always edit for authenticity.

  • Format your descriptions with CTAs and links at the top, and pin a comment if you’re on YouTube for easy mobile access.

  • Schedule everything—most platforms allow you to queue content, making consistency effortless.

Making It Sustainable

You can structure your workflow weekly:

  • Monday: Plan

  • Tuesday: Create

  • Wednesday: Edit

  • Thursday: Publish

  • Friday: Bonus day (repurpose content into blogs, emails, etc.)

Or monthly:

  • Week 1: Plan

  • Week 2: Create

  • Week 3: Edit

  • Week 4: Publish

  • Week 5: Bonus week

This method works best when producing 4–5 pieces of content per month, giving you flexibility and a built-in buffer.

Podcasting doesn’t have to take over your life. My method helps solopreneurs, consultants, and coaches get real ROI (return on investment) from their content—whether it’s growing an email list, engaging your community, or generating leads.

I also just launched the waitlist for my Solo Podcast Producer Blueprint, a DIY, interactive course with group consulting designed to get you podcasting in 10 hours or less per month. And don’t forget to check out my Free Resource Vault for templates, spreadsheets, and tools to make this whole process even easier.

Podcasting can feel intimidating, but with the right system, it doesn’t have to be. Plan, create, edit, publish—and make it yours.
